But research is starting to show that the long-held beliefs may be startlingly true. Here’s an infographic entitled “The Birth Order Effect” exploring how birth order may influence children’s personality, life choices, and careers. The United States has an average of 1.86 children per family, the highest birth rate being in Utah-at 2.21, and West Virginia having the lowest at 1.71. Each child in a family exhibits some very individual traits, however, many first born children, middle children, and youngest children will each exhibit some birth-order traits.
