we’ve seen huge improvements in how our health is managed today. Here is an infographic entitled, “Then and Now: From 1950 to Today” detailing the progression and improvement of medicine and medical technology in the last 60 years. Back in 1950, the average lifespan was 68.2 years. Today, the average life span is 78.6 years old. Not only are we living longer, but we are procreating at an increased rate as well. There were 3, 632,000 births in 1950, and last year we recorded 4, 131,019 births. Thanks to advances in medicine, infant mortality rates have dropped sharply. Compared to 1950’s number of 26.2 percent infant mortality, today’s hospitals are reporting a rate of 6.9 percent. This infographic also details the main causes of death in 1950 compared to today, listing causes like tuberculosis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and complications with pneumonia and influenza. Vaccines may be a controversial subject for some, but the number of deaths from diseases like polio, pertussis, and tetanus have shown a large drop since the invention of vaccines.
